Clear Lake is the area around the lake of the same name, about 24 miles southeast of Downtown by car. It grew up in the 1960s around NASA's Manned Spacecraft Center, now the Johnson Space Center, when Humble Oil's Friendswood Development Company built the master-planned Clear Lake City nearby. Today it mixes established neighborhoods, newer subdivisions, waterfront homes and condos, with quick access to Galveston Bay.
