Living in Kingwood
Kingwood is a master-planned community about 29 miles northeast of Downtown by car, on the west shore of Lake Houston. King Ranch and Friendswood Development Company, an Exxon subsidiary, launched it in the early 1970s, building its neighborhoods, called villages, among the existing pines and oaks. That approach earned it the nickname "The Livable Forest." The City of Houston annexed Kingwood in 1996, but it keeps its own identity, with a town center, trails and community association.
