How Texas rates public schools

The Texas Education Agency gives public schools and districts an A-F accountability rating each year, based on student achievement, school progress and closing the gaps. Our Houston School Ratings 2026 page lists TEA's 2026 overall ratings for the 743 zoned public schools in our Houston-area ZIP code guides, grouped by neighborhood and by ZIP code, and each grade links to the school's TEA report.

TEA issues new ratings each year, and a school's grade can move up or down. TXschools.gov shows the current ratings with more detail.

How to check the schools for an address

  1. Look up the address in the school district's attendance-zone or school-finder tool. In Houston ISD that is the district's school finder (School Navigator).
  2. Ask whether boundary changes are under review. Fort Bend ISD, for example, approved new elementary boundaries for 2026-27 and, in October 2026, secondary changes aimed at 2027-28.
  3. Look up each zoned campus's current rating on TXschools.gov or on our ratings page.
  4. Don't go by a mailing address or a subdivision name alone. Some subdivisions that use "Kingwood" in their name or mailing address sit north of the city limits and are served by New Caney ISD instead of Humble ISD, and The Woodlands' ZIP codes 77380, 77381 and 77382 are listed under Spring.

Each of our ZIP code guides lists the zoned public schools for that ZIP code with their 2026 TEA ratings.

Private and magnet schools in our guides

Our ratings page covers zoned public schools; charter, magnet and private schools are generally not listed there. Our neighborhood guides mention these:

  • Near River Oaks: St. John's School (pre-K through 12) at 2401 Claremont Lane, River Oaks Baptist School at 2300 Willowick Road, and Annunciation Orthodox School (pre-K through 8) on Yoakum Boulevard in nearby Montrose.
  • In the Memorial area: The Kinkaid School and St. Francis Episcopal School in Piney Point Village, and Duchesne Academy of the Sacred Heart on Memorial Drive.
  • Houston ISD magnet programs: River Oaks Elementary is a Vanguard magnet school and Garden Oaks Montessori is a public magnet school; many Montrose and EaDo students also apply to HISD magnet programs.

Private schools each have their own admissions calendar, so buyers relocating mid-year should contact schools early.

School FAQ

How are Texas public schools rated?

The Texas Education Agency gives public schools and districts an A-F accountability rating each year, based on student achievement, school progress and closing the gaps. The grades on our ratings page are TEA's 2026 overall ratings.

Where do the school ratings on this site come from?

They come from the Texas Education Agency's 2026 accountability ratings, matched to the zoned public schools listed in our Houston-area ZIP code guides. Each grade on our ratings page links to the school's TEA report, and TXschools.gov shows the same ratings with more detail.

How do I find the schools zoned to a specific address?

Use the school district's attendance-zone or school-finder tool for that address. Zones and school assignments can change, so confirm with the district before you buy or sell.

Do school ratings change from year to year?

Yes. TEA issues new ratings each year, and a school's grade can move up or down. Check the current year's rating on TXschools.gov before you decide.

Can a home's zoned schools change after I buy?

Yes. Districts review attendance boundaries as enrollment shifts. Fort Bend ISD approved new elementary boundaries for 2026-27 and, in October 2026, secondary changes aimed at 2027-28, and Houston ISD zones can change block by block. Check the district's lookup for the address and ask whether any boundary changes are under review.

Is every home with a Kingwood address in Humble ISD?

No. Kingwood proper, inside the City of Houston, is served by Humble ISD, including Kingwood High School and Kingwood Park High School. Some nearby subdivisions that use "Kingwood" in their name or mailing address sit north of the city limits in Montgomery County and are served by New Caney ISD instead. Confirm the school district and taxing entities for a specific address on the listing and with the district before buying.

Why isn't a school listed on the ratings page?

That page covers the zoned public schools included in our ZIP code guides. Charter, magnet and private schools are generally not listed, and a few schools could not be matched to TEA's 2026 list.
